Alexander Payne has directed and written a number of films throughout his filmmaking career. A Nebraska Native, Alexander Payne’s background includes studying at Standard to eventually obtaining his Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. His contribution to film led for him to be the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Nebraska.
Alexander Payne takes a unique approach towards filmmaking as he considers himself a student of its art. His process through developing film is structured day to day and this fluidity also leads for him to reference the script as being more as an outline for his cast and crew members instead of a firm requirement. He views working with skilled actors as artistic partners.
Payne has found himself collaborating with a lot of the same actors and writers throughout multiple films. He specifically enjoys working with the same people because he has the ability to reference past projects without having to get into further explanation of what has happened. He also states that it leads to better films. Alexander Payne is considered the second best film director of the 21st century according to Metacritic. His continual contribution towards the industry comes through what he considers innovation, but also teaches the viewers of his films the meaning of humanity.
